He was predeceased by: his brother Roger F. Atherton; and his parents, Violet E. Atherton and Harvey J. Atherton. He is survived by: his wife Cathy M. Atherton; and his son Rev. Jay J. Atherton. He is also survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
