He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Backus and Florence Backus; and his brother James (Catherine). He is survived by: his wife Leona; his sons, Adam (Sarah) and Scott (Evelyn); and his siblings, Georgette Romanelli (late John), Patricia Todaro (late Joseph), Lorraine Peters (late Anthony), Charles (late Sandra) and Lawrence (Kathleen). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
