He was predeceased by: his parents, Peter Nelson and Grace Hendry Nelson; his wife Peggy; and his siblings, Billy Nelson, Grace Lane, Huey Nelson and William Nelson.

He is survived by: his children, Peggy Palermo (Danny), Patricia Scialabba (Lou), Peter Nelson (Fran), Daniel Nelson (Jodi) and Christine Cannizzaro (Bruce); his siblings, Rose De'Rito and Michael Nelson; and his cousins, Nelson and Leonard. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren—with two more great-grandchildren.
