Joseph Alfred McNeil Obituary
With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Joseph Alfred McNeil of Port Jefferson, New York, who passed away on September 4, 2025 at the age of 83. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
He was predeceased by: his parents, Alfred McNeil and Mildred McNeil; and his son Ron. He is survived by: his wife Ina Mae Brown McNeil; his children, Alan McNeil (Shirley), Jacqueline Jackson (Robert), Joseph McNeil Jr. (Sheridan) and Frank McNeil (Dawn); his cousins, Henry Porter McNeil, Richard McNeil (Shirley), Billy Freeman, Bernard Galloway (Gloria) and Kathleen March Nesmith; and his granddaughter Franchon Francees. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
He received four honorary doctorates—from North Carolina A&T, St. John's University, UNC Wilmington, and Molloy University—and in 2010 was awarded the Smithsonian's James Smithson Bicentennial Medal for his lasting contributions to American history.
