He was predeceased by: his parents, Stanley Merritt and Ellen Kelly Merritt; his wife Alice Joan Brown; and his siblings, Stanley, Richard Merritt, Patricia O'Conner, Janet Heller, Audrey DeHart and Barbara "Joyce" Burger.
He is survived by: his children, Howard J. Merritt Jr. (Laura) of Clinton Corners, Bonnie Merritt (Mike Boccia) of Pleasant Valley, Carl Merritt (Diana) of Stanfordville, Jeffrey Merritt (Tracy) of Hyde Park, Shawn Merritt of Poughkeepsie and Brian Merritt of Hyde Park. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
