I’ll always remember the first time I met her; it was three decades or so ago, at a Greek women of the diaspora conference in Athens, and there she was on the speakers’ platform, engaged in rigorous conversation—smart and professional and witty—and, what’s more, resplendent in an elegant red suit. I felt I needed to get to know that woman. Ours was a long-distance friendship—sometimes years would go by without connecting—but I cherish the memory of all the times we met and of our long phone conversations. She was a caring person and a passionate teacher, a great listener, and lots of fun—I can still hear her laughter—always radiating positive energy. She will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to her family and loved ones.”

“Just 2 days ago i was discussing with a mutual friend if she had heard from Martha. I wanted to know how she was with her health. And here news delivered like a blow. Our mutual friend told me that she was named professor Emeritus from SFSU something she very much deserved. Her real love was the contemporary 20th century Greek literature, she was a scholar of all our modern writers: George Seferis, Elytis, Ritsos, Kavafy, Kazantzakis and many others. May you rest in peace my friend.”
