He was also cherished by many loving nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, friends may send donations to the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 3-3-3 in New City, New York.

“My heart is in tiny, shattered pieces for the entire Mattern Family. I got to know Judie on my first day of 10th grade at Suffern High School. We were in the same Home Room Class, and I was "the new kid". She came up to me and said she was going to be my friend, and she was from that day on. The family was always warm and welcoming whenever I was at their house. You could see/feel the love they had for each other as they brought you into their fold. Paul, you were my big brother.
