Edward E. Calnek Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Edward E. Calnek in Rochester, New York, who passed away on April 22, 2025, leaving to mourn family and friends. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
He was loved and cherished by many people including: his father Otto Calnek; his former spouse Richard Roark; his wife Sue Roark-Calnek; his siblings, Bruce Calnek, Betty Breen and Marjorie Connelly; his children, Stephen, Michael, Anthony and Julia Calnek (Ed); and his grandchildren, Talia, Rachel Calnek-Sugin, Rosina and Thomas "Ted" Calnek.
For the middle three decades of his long life – he died just days after celebrating his 95th birthday – Ed was a professor of anthropology at the University of Rochester, introducing undergraduates to the principles of archeology long before Indiana Jones popularized the profession and mentoring many graduate students who would go on to make important contributions to Mesoamerican studies.
