He was predeceased by: his parents, Kenneth Bates and Marion Welker Bates; his parents-in-law, Raymond Foster Sr. and Mary Jeanne Ireland Foster; his siblings, Richard Bates, Robert Bates (Shirley), Joyce Newcomb (Robert), Marjorie Cunningham (George) and Loraine Zury; and his brother-in-law Raymond Foster Jr..
He is survived by: his wife Robin Foster Bates; his sons, Chad Bates (Jodi), Jason Bates (Kate) and Todd Bates (Sarah); his grandchildren, Cameron, Samantha, Levi, Devin and Bryson; his brother Frank Bates (Barb); and his siblings-in-law, Douglas Foster (Maureen), Bill Schuhart and Lori Alloco (Steve). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
