He was predeceased by: his father James P. McCarthy; his sister Laura McCarthy Fried; and his stepfather John F. Brusa. He is survived by: his mother Teresa McCarthy Brusa; his siblings, John McCarthy (Doreen), Kitty Cowan (Bob) and Maureen Colson (Rick); his nephew Jim McCarthy (Jessica); his great-niece Bernadette; his great-nephew Abel; his nieces, Kelly Cowan, Christie Colson and Sarah Talucci (Andrew); his great-nieces and great-nephews, Nora, Talia and August; and his stepsiblings, Rose Morgan (Tom), Maria Lee (Rick), Joseph Brusa (Jacki), Patrick Bursa (Cheryl), Elizabeth Brusa, John Brusa (Joanne) and Elena Sewall (Mike).
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Joseph's House for Women in Syracuse.
