He was predeceased by: his mother Emma Johnson Herndon; and his wife Laura A. Whitaker. He is survived by: his children, Vanessa Walker Holloman, Joe Whitaker Jr. (Lurenza), Laurae "Donnie" Whitaker Smith, Margaret "Peggy" Tearney, Nicole "Nikki" Cathcart and Candace "Candy" Cathcart; his stepchildren, Carlton Cathcart, Tina Cathcart and Shirell Cathcart; and his siblings, Sidney Herndon, Thelma Reed and Regina Herndon. He is also survived by cousins; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
