He was predeceased by: his parents, David James and Mildred James (Wright); his wife Dorothy Ann Coplon; his siblings, Josephine James, Louise Samuels, Elizabeth Wright, Vivian "Vie" Titus-Ball, Grace "Audrey" Lyles, David "Sonny" James and Carl James; and his son Keith James.

He is survived by: his siblings, Louis James and Dava James of Chicago; his children, Sandra James Coleman (John), Linda Gayle Williams of North Carolina and Vincent James (Cynthia) of Las Vegas, Nevada; and his grandchildren, John Coleman Jr. of Utica, William James of New Orleans, Matthew James of Las Vegas and Angelica Williams of North Carolina. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 8th 2026 at 3:00 PM at the Myslinski, Kowalczyk & Nunn Funeral Directors (470 French Rd, Utica, NY 13502).
