HENRY WALTER LANGHORST On Wednesday, November 3, 2021, Henry Walter Langhorst passed away at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Walter Langhorst, his mother, Edna Hornbeck, and his two sisters, Jean, and Audrey. He is survived by his partner Annmarie Anderson, his daughters, Linda Langhorst Raclin (and husband Grier) and Diane Langhorst Zamow (and husband Dan), his stepchildren Kelly Cook (and husband Tom), Butch McCormack (and wife Lorraine) and John McCormack (and wife Laura), and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Walter was born on May 14, 1932, in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, New York. He never lost his Brooklyn roots, often reminiscing about everything from stickball to Ebbets Field and the Brooklyn Dodgers. As a young adult, he entered Fordham University, studied American history, and graduated in 1953. He also took up playing golf, taking the subway to golf courses nearby, a sport that became a mainstay in his life.

He loved a great day of golf, coaching high school golf players, and always had a story about Bobby Jones or Arnold Palmer. After Fordham, he served for two years as a Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. While he wasn't the kind of retired Marine who wore a gun strapped to his hip, he was always influenced by the Corps' deep commitment to honor, justice, and loyalty.

Upon re-entering civilian life, he began his career as a history teacher and high school golf coach, married a fellow teacher (the late Lillian Etoile Langhorst), and had two daughters, Linda and Diane. They enjoyed life on Long Island, and summers on Chebeague Island, Maine. Throughout his career as a high school teacher and golf coach, Walter infused his classes and his coaching with his deeply held values.

In the tumultuous 1960s, he embraced his students' spirited ideas, leading them in 1969 to devote their yearbook to him for his willingness to "try and change the system.". He didn't leave that spirit at school; our family dinner table was filled with conversations about Martin Luther King, Jr., Gloria Steinem, and Robert Kennedy.

Later, he met his beloved partner Annmarie Anderson, the light of his life. Together they shared years of life's celebrations and challenges. Walter found great joy in each of her children, Kelly, Butch and John, and loved them deeply. Walter had a great, hearty laugh, and a warm engaging spirit. We like to remember him with a glowing tan, having finished a great round of golf, looking out at the ocean with bursting optimism, saying "This is a Chebeague Island day!".

We wish you many more of those, dad; they are well deserved. The family is immeasurably grateful to Annmarie Anderson for the care, support, and assistance she provided to Walter in his later years. Thank you so much for everything.
