He was predeceased by : his brother Christopher Gates; his brother-in-law Bill Dunn; and his sisters, Margret Gates, Mary Wilson (Percy) and Loretta Webb (Larry).

He is survived by : his sisters, Johnnie Mae Dunn of Akron, Carolyn Iverson (Willie) of Akron, Marlene Gates of Akron and Rachel Williams of Akron; and his nephew Brandon Gates. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
