He was predeceased by: his wife Kathleen A. Backer; his son Thomas; and his sister Margarete Burghardt. He is survived by: his children, Michael Backer (Dianne), Dianne Duckworth (Warren), Jeff Backer (Mary), Peter Backer (Susan), Mark Backer (LeAnn), David Backer (Patricia) and Stephanie Fahey (Justin); and his siblings, Steve Backer, Louisa Berens, Henrietta Johnson, Mary Anne Meindl and Joseph Backer. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren; and 21 great‑grandchildren.
