He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Shaffer and Sylvia Mossing; his stepparents, Milford Hann and Myra Harwood; his brother John "Pete" Shaffer; and his stepsiblings, Thomas Pfenning, Robin Scott and Jodi Scott.

He is survived by: his wife Linda; his children, Justin Shaffer, Heidi Schaefer (Max Osbun), Niki Leininger (Gregg) and Josh Short; his grandchildren, Hunter, Isaac, Nolan, Landen, Phoenix, Jaden, Jace, Madeline and Mason; his great grandchildren, Kai and Kru; his pet Van Gogh (Vannie); his siblings, Alice Massie, Jill Brown, Scott Shaffer and Hollis Shaffer, Sr.; and his stepsiblings, Cathy Drummer and Randy Scott.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Jay's honor to the Fulton County Humane Society.
