He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Bates and Audrey Bates; his wife Laura Miller; his daughter Sandra Watson; his stepmother Dorothy Bates; and his siblings, Paul, Richard, Kenneth and Dorothy.
He is survived by: his children, Mike Bates (Trudy) of Ashland, David Bates (Lida) of Ashland and Jane Bunn of Ashland; his son-in-law Cliff Watson of Greenwich; his grandchildren, Josh Bates (Jennifer) of Ashland, Anthony Bunt (Michelle) of Ashland, Kristin Stover (Robert) of Ashland, Megan Harper (Richard) of Ashland, Misti Simmons (Tony) of Ashland, Dustin Bates (Avrial) of Ashland and Kaley Wickham (Steven) of Ashland; his son Suki Kudo of Columbus, Ohio; and his brother Dean Bates of Ashland. He is also survived by numerous great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 30th 2026 at 1:30 PM at the Nankin Cemetery (776 OH-302, Ashland, OH 44805).
