He was predeceased by: his parents, William Laney and Clora Davis Laney; and his brothers, Daniel Laney and Billy Gene Laney. He is survived by: his wife Sheila Mullins Laney; his children, Jacob Laney of Ashland Kentucky and Jessica Frier (Landis) of Buford, Georgia; his stepchildren, Katherine Forney (Carl) of Athens and Geoffrey Kleimeyer (Bryn) of Grandview Heights, Ohio; his sister Linda Zornes (Leo); and his sister-in-law Phyllis Laney of Catlettsburg, Kentucky.. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.
