James leaves behind cherished memories for friends, family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. James’s life was marked by connections and experiences that touched those around him. He was predeceased by: his parents, William Syler and Mary Syler (Nelson); and his son Michael Ray Syler. He is survived by: his wife Pauline; his children, Paula Birch of New Philadelphia and Jim Syler, Jr. (Bobbie) of Dover; his stepchildren, Roberta Kirkpatrick (Scott) of Florida, Colleen Coffy (Paul) of Berlin and Robert Studer (Gay) of South Carolina; and his brother Elmer "Bud" Syler. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Smith-Varns Funeral Home (115 Andreas Dr NE, Sugarcreek, OH 44681). A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 at 3:00 PM at the same location.
