He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Vincent and Frances Elizabeth Schmelzer (Kunkler); his former wife Elda Mae Schmelzer (Stoltz); his wife Patsy Lee Schmelzer (Barton); his siblings, Walter, Joseph, Charles Schmelzer, Mary (Hartman) and Josephine Schmelzer; and his siblings-in-law, Samuel Hartman, William Kruse, Richard Waits and Dorothy "Dottie" Schmelzer.
He is survived by: his children, Lucinda "Cindy" Hiles, Timothy Richard Schmelzer (Linda Morgan) and Jeffrey Lynn Schmelzer (Dena Johnson); his stepsons, Robert "Bob" (Stephanie), Timothy (Renee) and Jeffrey Barton (Wendy); his sisters, Elizabeth "Betty Kruse" Shull and Marcella Waits; and his pet Sophie. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, September 17th 2026 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Morgan Funeral Home (124 Fort St, Bremen, OH 43107). A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 18th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Mt. Zion Ub Cemetery (2965 Toll Gate Rd, Junction City, OH 43748).
