He was predeceased by: his parents, John Smith and Shirley Burling Smith (Mills); and his sister Janet Kay. He is survived by: his sons, John and Lyle Jr.; his siblings, Randy Burling (June) of Bucyrus, Curtis Burling of Marion, Jean Syer of Bucyrus, Paula Sandlin of Bucyrus and Elizabeth Coonrod of New Mexico; his grandchildren, Emaleigh and Caiden; his children, Harrison, Vaida and Kaila; and his grandchild Harper. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
