He was predeceased by: his parents, Isaac Blaine Bates and Rosa Bates (White); his wife Rose Anne Winland; his son-in-law Stanley Leonard; and his siblings, Bessie Willis, Orval Bates (Bates), Albert Bates, Goldie Wilson, Chester Bates, Mildred Moore, Virgil Bates and Calvin Bates.
He is survived by: his children, Ruth Leonard, Steve Bates (Jeanette), Karen Hinton (Randy) and Philip Bates (Kathy); his brothers-in-law, Max Winland, Danny Winland (Connie) and Joe Winland (Barb); and his friend Lemon. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 4th 2026 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and on Monday, October 5th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home (650 W Waterloo St, Canal Winchester, OH 43110). A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 5th 2026 at 11:00 AM.
