He was predeceased by: his parents, Ed Barnes and Lizett Barnes; his wife Thelma Barnes; and his siblings, Lloyd Barnes, Monroe Barnes Sr., Tommie Barnes, Walter Barnes, Ed Barnes, Jr., Horace Barnes, Henrietta Hatcher (Barnes) and Lizett Porter (Barnes).

He is survived by: his daughter Jamila Barnes; his grandchildren, Graham Archie Gibson, Matthew Dean Gibson, Janeal Barnes-McDonald, Liana Barnes-McDonald and Jocelyn Barnes-McDonald; and his brothers, James Barnes, Harry Barnes and Jessie Barnes. He is also survived by other in-laws' nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
