He was predeceased by: his wife Rita Marie Wessel; his grandson Alexander Beck; his parents, Elmer Wessel and Myrtle Wessel; and his sister Donna Scheffel.
He is survived by: his children, John R. Jr. (Cheryl), Mary Hart (John), Terri (Betzee Schott), Ruth Zinser (Dan), Kelli Phelps (Rick) and Robert (Vicky); his grandchildren, Rebecca Archibald (Brent), Elizabeth Gentry (Luke), Allison Hart, Nicholas Zinser (Allison), Corey Zinser (Heather), Sydney Lapham (Benjamin), Kasey Smith (Brandon), Michael Phelps, Courtney Phelps, Logan Phelps, Emma Wessel and A. J. Wessel; and his siblings-in-law, Robert and Jo Ann Hanekamp. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
