He is survived by: his wife Margaret "Sis" Whalen; his children, Mary Sue Jackson (Jim), Mike Whalen, Tim Whalen (Jean), Maureen O'Brien (Kevin), Colleen Lohrer (Mike), Theresa Whalen (Clint Phillips) and Peggy Simmons (Dan); his sisters, Mary Ann Gatio and Kathy Stricker; and his grandchildren, Nicholas, Erin (Joe), Patrick (Mikaela), Daniel (Rachel), Eric, Tina (Nate), Jason (Madison), Megan (Pat), Evan, Nolan and Callie. He is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
