He was predeceased by: his parents, Marjorie Irwin Thomas (Johns) and Lewis Thomas (JoAnn Irwin); and his sister Carol Ann Siverling. He is survived by: his wife Anita Tussing; his children, Erik Caprella (Kris), Jennifer Irwin (Joanna) and Nathan Irwin (Donna); and his siblings, Lynda Springer, Darrel Irwin (Barb), Dale Irwin (Becky), Dana Irwin (Polly) and David Irwin (Stacy). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Franklin (OH) County Dog Shelter or the Victory Kitchen in Sandusky (Erie County, OH).
