He is survived by: his wife Mary M. McGann Elko; his children, Susan Rose, Lori Elko and James Elko, Jr. (Amy Horvath); his grandchildren, Dylan Rose, Melanie Weigel-Rose (Bailey) and Cierra Kitts; and his brother Joseph Elko. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews.
