He was predeceased by : his parents, Robert Fortener and Regina Fortener (Schmitt); his son Robert Eugene; his granddaughter Katie Hayson; his great grandchildren, Aubrey Klausing and Claire Hayson; and his siblings, Eugene Schmitt, Robert Fortener, Jr., John Fortener and Helen Bottorff.

He is survived by : his children, Rick Fortener (Marla) of Delphos, Barb Myers (Bill) of Van Wert, Bonnie Mullenhour (Bill) of Delphos and Connie Klausing (Denny) of Delphos; his grandchildren, Laura Schram (Keith), Ricky Fortener, Karen Juarez (Rigo), David Hayson (Sarah), Tyler Hayson (Taylor), Kyle Mullenhour (Katie), Kory Mullenhour (Tammy), Kayla Mullenhour, Brad Klausing (Kendra) and AJ Klausing (Alyssa); and his sisters, Frani Wurst (Roger) of Delphos and Karen Osting (Norm) of Troy. He is also survived by 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Van Wert Manor Activities Fund or the charity of the donor's choice.

“Sending most sincere condolences in the loss of your beloved Elmer. His cousin, June (Weber) Link remembers him fondly as one of her favorite cousins who always had a story to tell and a laugh to share each time she saw him. He will be sadly missed.”
