He was predeceased by: his parents, Julius M. Benfield and Sarah Benfield (Bell); and his son Brent Benfield. He is survived by: his children, Ken Keirns (Kristine) of Land, Cindi Newcomb (Jay) of Riverview, MI, Renee Tarp of Waterford, MI and Jane Keirns (Craig Powell) of Forest, OH; his siblings-in-law, Tom German (Ginny) of Elida and Susan Smith of Delphos; his grandchildren, Erik Newcomb (Rachel Meray), Jacob Newcomb, Jordan Keirns (Abbie), Trevin Keirns (Ava De Amezola), Colin Keirns and Nolan Keirns; and his great grandchildren, Vincent Meray, Brielle Meray, Carmen Keirns and Hayes Keirns. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family to support local educational initiatives, reflecting Jim's lifelong dedication to learning, teaching, and students.
