He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Shafer and Hazel Shafer (Popp); and his siblings, Howard, Bob, Don, Paul Shafer, Frieda, Esther, Mary Ellen Shafer and Rachel Adkins.
He is survived by: his wife Lavonne "Bonnie" Shafer (Swart); his children, Barry Shafer (Jessica) and Becky McCollum (Rick); and his grandchildren, Kate Carr (Beamer), Maggie Reckers (Skylar), Miles McCollum (Anna), Reade and Rachel Shafer. He is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
