He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald Metz and Voneta Metz (Kline). He is survived by: his daughters, Valarie Keefer (Paul) of Fayette and Amy Metz-Simon (Jason) of Fayette; his grandchildren, Logan Keefer (Brittany), Spencer Keefer, Dylan Keefer (Autumn Rock) and Claudia Metz; his stepgrandchildren, Julia Gray (Addison) and Jordan Simon; his friend Brian Myers of Fayette; and his former wife Brenda (Shinabery). He is also survived by four great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, August 26th 2026 from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Thursday, August 27th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Fayette Church of the Nazarene (511 S Fayette St, Fayette, OH 43521). A funeral service was held on Thursday, August 27th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location.

Memorial contributions in honor of Gene are suggested to benefit the Building Fund at the Fayette Church of the Nazarene.
