He was predeceased by: his grandparents, Ruth Johnston, James Harold and Madgie Sparks; his granddaughter Riley Jo Johnston; his aunt Barbara Ziessler; and his cousin David Faust.

He is survived by: his parents, James Johnston and JoAnn Johnston (Harold); his wife Dawn M. VanAtta; his children, David Johnston of Belcamp, Heather Borsos (Andrew) of Bowling Green, Nikki Johnston of Findlay and James Johnston, Jr. (Danielle) of Findlay; his grandchildren, Kylie, Wyliam, Vincent, Benjamin, Elizabeth and Madison; and his siblings, Jeffery Johnston (Debbie) of Findlay, Joseph Johnston (Molly) of Findlay, Ruthie Vucinich (Cary) of Scottsdale, Jason Johnston (Jennifer) of Findlay and Timmy Workman (Lori) of Delbarton, WV. He is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews.
