He was predeceased by: his parents, Eugene H. Shafer and Virginia Shafer (Crider). He is survived by: his wife Linda Shafer; and his children, Brigitte Shafer, Gladys Gilbert, Bryan Shafer, Leah Knox and Geno Shafer. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
