She was predeceased by: her parents, James Arthur Simmons and Cora Lee Harris; her children, Sammy McMillan and Maya Thompson; her husband Joseph Thompson Jr.; her son Jonathan Luther Thompson; and her siblings, Terry Simmons, Toni Collier and Calvin Simmons Sr..
She is survived by: her sister Hilda Simmons; her grandchildren, William, Daija Thomas, Aivry, Korren Thompson, Devante White and Jason Michael Mueller; and her great grandchildren, Ezekiel, Memmarie Thomas, Julius Thomas and Domonic Davis Jr.. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, in-laws and other extended family.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages those who knew her to take a long walk in her honor, cook a favorite meal for someone they love, or simply call a family member and say, "I love you"—just like she always did.
