He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas A. Clay and Geneva E. Ross Clay. He is survived by: his wife Patricia Wise Clay; his daughters, Sheree Jenkins (Tom), Margery Henderson (Ed), Terri Williams, Susie Anderson (Doug), Laura Thorne (Tony) and Lily Staker; his siblings, Betty Sherman, Jack Clay, Charles Clay, Wanda Riegel and Floyd Clay; his sons-in-law, Chuck Staker and Steve Hill; and his granddaughter Gretchen Duncan. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren as well several nieces, nephews, and many close friends.
