He was predeceased by: his parents, George Issac Thompson and Mary Louise Averett (Cole); his siblings, Darell Averett, Douglas E. Averett, Rose Marie Averett and Delores Y. Jackson; and his grandparents, Marie Reeder Gilbert, Lena Coffey and Ronnie Cole.
He is survived by: his children, James E. Averett, Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, Sharon D. Saunders (Brittany) of Columbus, LaTanya S. Averett-Hampton (DJ) of Columbus and Syvillia A. Averett of Brunswick, Georgia.; and his siblings, Cornell I. Cole (Sherry) of LaPlace, Vivian A. Jackson of Lima, Vernessa M. Averett of Lima, Debora Thompson of Lima and Georgia A. Thompson of California. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
