He was predeceased by: his parents, Harold August and Thelma Jean Appel (Klingelhoffer); and his siblings, Barbara Ann Appel Blue, Richard Lee Appel and Kenneth Charles Appel.

He is survived by: his wife Anna Appel (Lotterer); his children, Jennifer Saunders (Billy) and Brian Appel (Anne); his grandchildren, William Saunders III, Emily Saunders, Caleb Appel and Hannah Appel; his brother-in-law John Lotterer (Burletta); and his nieces and nephews, Jeff, Holly, Heather, Tony and Lynn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ridgeway Church of God.

“So very sorry to hear of bob's passing. I worked with him many years ago when he was in information systems. Such a nice guy and so family oriented. God's blessings to his family. Rih my friend... Sweet memory... I remember one day when bob was out of town and his daughter, probably about 3 years old at the time, pushed a button on their phone at home. His phone rang and i answered and heard this sweet little voice wanting to talk to her daddy... He was so thrilled to hear that story...”
