He was predeceased by: his parents, Cecil Markwell and Maudie Markwell (Knipp); his wife Martha I. Ditmars; and his siblings, Essie Risner, Hazel Markwell, Nola Markwell, Willard Markwell, Robbie Markwell and Alva Ray Markwell.
He is survived by: his children, Alan Markwell (Charlotte), Gary Markwell, Larry Markwell (Vicky), Willis Markwell and Teresa Liggett; his granddaughters, Danielle Garrett (Ben) and Sara Kepple; and his brothers, Louie Markwell and Haskel Markwell (Violet). He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren.
