He is survived by: his mother Bessie Tyus; his sons, Joseph Tyus II and Eric Tyus (Monica); and his siblings, Daniel Tyus, Anthony Tyus and Diane Tyus. He is also survived by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
