He was predeceased by: his parents, Virgil Johns and Anna D Johns (McCalla); his wife Helen Irene Johns (Wernersbach); his brothers, Harold Johns (Linda) and Richard Johns (Denise); and his daughter-in-law Cherri James.

He is survived by: his children, Joseph H. Johns, Jr. (Denise), Jim Johns, Anne Johns and Becky Hughes (Steven); and his brothers, David Johns (Susan) and Carl Johns. He is also survived by his 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
