He was predeceased by: his parents, James Austin and Violet Virginia Gates (Hall); his son-in-law Michael Joseph Trabert II; and his great grandchild Arloh Gates. He is survived by: his children, Heather L. Trabert and Gary Steven Gates (Gegit); his former wife Cindi Schwender-Kirkland of St. Clairsville; his cousin Jeanne Barrett of New Manchester; and his grandchildren, Brittnay Neal (Casey), Ashley Berka (Josh), Scott Gates, Valerie Gates, Keirstin Trabert and Kamrynn Trabert.
