He was predeceased by: his parents, Guy Bates and Reetha Pearl Longwell Bates; his wife Sarah Gail Holmes Bates; and his siblings, Geraldine Lamont, Katherine Bates and Guy Bates.
He is survived by: his daughters, Sarah Torres (Tony) and Vida Ann Bates; and his grandchildren, Brooklyn Marie Torres and Brighton Louise Torres.
