James Pokas Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of James Pokas of Martins Ferry, Ohio, born in Bellaire, Ohio, who passed away on March 23, 2022, at the age of 57, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his father Calvin Pokas. He is survived by: his mother Betty Pokas (Gatchel); his siblings, John Pokas (Jane) and Judy Mayles (Duane); and his uncle Paul Pokas. He is also survived by four nieces and nephews and one great-niece.

Jane Oakley wrote a sympathy message

“I just saw this. On a whim, I googled Jim, wondering what happened to him. I was in Jim's cohort at Ohio State. The first words I ever said to him was a long the lines of what word be the correct spelling of the word for more than one Pokas: Pokases or Pokai? We became pretty close. We spent most at least an hour together every evening...we lived in the same graduate dorm that first year. We lost touch, and the last I heard, Jim moved to CA. I remember wearing his 🏈 jersey like it was yesterday”

“Jim was a great friend of mine. I trusted him with my valued things (my archives) when I moved away because I knew they’d be safe with him. Now I’m shocked that he has left his mortal coil. We met when he took my stand-up course in ‘96. He let me sleep on his couch in LA for 18 months from 2002 on. We crashed the Oscars together in a custom ‘54 Belair stretch limo. Extremely bright, Jim was a delight. I loved making him laugh. RIP Scoobie Davis!”
