He was predeceased by: his parents, Napoleon Heath and Willie Howard Matthews; his wife Wanda Carol Matthews; and his grandson Charles Matthews III. He is survived by: his children, Carol R. Masslow (Thomas E.), Charles R. Matthews, Jr. (Jeanne A.) and Judy A. Parnell (Jack); his grandchildren, Christina Mullis (Ken), Tom Miller, Becky Peet (Spencer) and Andrew Matthews; and his great grandchildren, Justin, Christian, Abby, Jakob, Tommy, Max and Archie.
The family has requested that no flowers be sent, but rather memorial contributions in Charles' honor be made to the Wounded Warrior Foundation.
