He was predeceased by: his parents, Larry Arnold Clay and Joyce Gail Lockard Clay; his brother Larry Everett Clay; and his stepmother Lois Elenor Clay. He is survived by: his son Johnny Clay; and his siblings, Gary Clay, Jeramie Kirkpatrick (Melissa), Vickey Marsh, Connie Withrow (Eric) and Janet Elswick (Chris). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
