It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Paul Smathers of Nelsonville, Ohio, born in Athens, Ohio, who passed away on April 5, 2024, at the age of 79, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by : his parents, Carl Smathers and Garnet Smathers (Reynolds); his wife Diana Smathers (Thomas); his grandson JC Daubenmire; and his daughter Paula Hummel.

He is survived by : his sons, John Smathers of Columbus and Joel Smathers of Columbus; his grandchildren, Nicole, Tia, Katie, Chaz, Sarah and Tyler; his siblings, Jeff Smathers (Maryann) of The Plains, Shirley Whalen of Carbon Hill, Mike Thomas (Tammy) of Sugar Grove, Howard and Carol Dane Meeks of Carbon Hill; and his close friends, Gary, Jenny Carsey, Ed "Doc" Simms and Jeanie Curtis. He is also survived by 5 great grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, April 9th 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home (46 Fayette St, Nelsonville, OH 45764). A graveside service was held on Wednesday, April 10th 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Hilltop Cemetery Millfield Cemetery.

The family suggests donations in memory of Paul be made to FairHoPe Hospice, 282 Sells Rd, Lancaster, Ohio 43130.
