He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Schell and Elvira Schell (Hill); his siblings, David Schell, Daniel Schell, Gregory Schell (Mary Jane) and Barbara Heffley (Doug); and his sister-in-law Catherine Schell.

He is survived by: his wife Julieann Schell (Gym Jam); his sons, Christopher Schell (Deborah) and Hans Schell (Erin); his grandchildren, Jack, Nicholas, Joseph, Alexandra "Lexi" and Andrew Schell; his siblings, Charles Schell (Gail), Mark Schell (Lynnette White), Monica Stell, Stephen Schell (Susie), Anne Schell and Michael Schell; and his sisters-in-law, Jane Schell, Barbara Schell and Mary Alice Swank. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
