He was predeceased by: his father William Edward Payne; his brother Bill Payne; his stepfather Ralph Fry; and his nephew Joel Johnson. He is survived by: his mother Janet E. Fry (Williams); his daughter Lise Smith (Justin); his grandchildren, Skyla and Blaze Smith; his siblings, Beth Shively and Tom Payne (Mary Jo); his aunt Ann Blackburn; his stepmother Nell Payne; and his daughter Kathy Sanders. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
