He is survived by : his wife Renee Young-Schmitt; his children, Tiffany, Katie Schmitt, Zack Exline and Tommy Schmitt; his stepchildren, Jase and Josh Kilbourne; his sisters, Sueann Stanley of Warren, Tammy Schmitt of Warren, Carmel Schmitt of Niles and Jamie Schmitt of Warren; and his aunt Annette Robinson.

His foundation in life was family and friends.

“I am sorry for not knowing about this sooner and being able to express my sympathy sooner. I no longer live in Ohio and was just stopping by to visit when I was told about this tragedy. I don't know when I met Tommy but he was always a friend to me. He was always the big guy that was good to have on your side. And I bet he became a good dad to his children. He will be missed.
