He was predeceased by : his father Levi Chesley; his siblings, Herman Rakes, Levi Rakes Jr., Howard Rakes, Pearly Rakes, Elmer Rakes, Arlie Rakes, Jesse Rakes and Lucinda Adkins (Rakes); his son-in-law Richard "Rick" Richmond; his grandson Thomas Anthony Rakes; and his great grandchild Levi Ray Edwards.
He is survived by : his wife Thelma Loucreta Rakes (Adkins); his children, Janet Forshey (John), Deborah Hall (Michael), Timothy Rakes (Karla), Polly Hurd (David Clyde), John Rakes (Denise), June McNeely (Chuck) and Rushie Richmond; and his sister Mary Ellen Lovejoy. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
